Careers in Justice Studies

A Career in Justice Studies

The Bachelor's degree in Justice Studies prepares students to become effective organizational players in today's workplace. Criminal justice studies the phenomenon of social control in organized societies whereby substantive and procedural laws are primary social control mechanisms. Our award-winning program prepares students for employment or graduate school in numerous fields of criminal justice and human services. We also serve as a beacon for career enhancement for current practitioners. With today's market demands, a four-year, liberal arts degree in criminal justice is paramount for employment and upward mobility. Let our faculty team of "scholar-practitioners" assist you in attaining your personal and professional goals!

Mission Statement

Justice Studies is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry focused on the philosophical, theoretical and practical applications of justice, and on the resolution of conflict within society. Rather than train individuals for a particular occupation through sole instruction in specific vocational skills, the program offers a broad liberal arts education which focuses on the cultivation of analytical and creative thought, and the ability to communicate effectively in a 21st century workplace and social environment.

Compare Us

Fort Hays State University is a nationally accredited, four-year liberal arts institution in the State of Kansas Board of Regents system. It is the western-most state university in Kansas and primarily serves a 64-county district. Currently, there are four (4) regionally accredited Kansas state universities offering a degree in criminal justice, exclusively: Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University, Wichita State University, and Washburn University. Washburn still retains its municipal college status and has its own Board of Regents. The University of Kansas and Kansas State University both have sociology degrees with concentrations in criminal justice. This, however, is not a degree program and is not recognized as such on an academic transcript.

In addition Fort Hays State University Justice Studies Program also offers an accredited degree program available completely online. For distance education students interested in a criminal justice degree. FHSU does NOT charge out of state tuition for non-Kansas residents, making us one of the most affordable CJ distance education programs in the country!
