TEEL 230 Diverse Learners
A critical study of the multicultural environment in the American educational system with emphasis pertaining to the culturally diverse learners. The various areas of emphasis will include, yet will not be limited to, the issues of culture, ethnicity, religion, linguistics, and (dis)abilities. Through this course the student will be empowered to deal with diversity in the classroom.
TEEL 260 Children's Literature
This course is designed to provide knowledge of genre of literature, activities, and units that focus on literature, cultural awareness through literature and the competence in selecting and evaluating books for children.

Requisite Information: PR., Sophomore level or PERM
TEEL 273 Professional Practice & Observation
This field experience will provide the student an opportunity to obtain practical and focused observations in elementary school settings. Additional components of the course focus on time management, adjustment to university life, the role of a professional, and becoming a reflective observer.
TEEL 277 Early Field Experience
The course is designed to provide education majors with an observation and participation experience in an area of special interest. Students are placed in an educational setting relevant to their program.

Requisite Information: PR., PERM.
TEEL 278 Field Experience I
Field experience will provide the student an opportunity to obtain practical experience in an area of interest.
TEEL 280 Honors Internship 2
A forty-hour field experience designed to introduce the preservice teacher to beginning elements of sound teaching practice, in particular the integration of children's literature, and physical education.

Requisite Information: Good standing in Honors program required, PR., TEEL 276, TEEL 279. CO., TEEL 281, TEEL 260, HHP 410
TEEL 281 Honors Seminar 2
Critical analysis and discussion of classroom instructional practices as they pertain to theory, content knowledge and practice for the integration of children's literature and physical education. Students will continue individual research projects under the supervision of a professor in the Department of Teacher Education.

Requisite Information: HHP 410, TEEL 260, TEEL 280, TEEL 278, TEEL 279, Good standing in Honors program required, to be taken first semester of Sophomore year
TEEL 340 The Effective Classroom
This class is designed for pre-service teachers who will learn to set up, plan, and implement effective teaching and discipline strategies to optimize students' on-task time. This course is not about how to discipline, but how to teach responsibility and accountability for students to become responsible. The principles can be applied to all settings and all grade levels.

Requisite Information: Admittance to Teacher Education Required
TEEL 350 Curriculum & Assessment
Curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation as well as action research strategies that support learning at elementary and middle school levels will be studied. Students will critique and develop curricula appropriate for meeting content and professional standards.

Requisite Information: Admittance to Teacher Education Required
TEEL 362 Mathematics and Science Methods
This course provides methods for teaching mathematics and science and the integration of this content. The focus will be on theory, teaching strategies and hands-on learning.

Requisite Information: Admission to Teacher Education Required
TEEL 363 Elementary School Social Studies
The course presents basic principles, procedures and instructional practices as a process in teaching social studies in the elementary school.

Requisite Information: Admission to Teacher Education Required
TEEL 365 Reading and Language Arts Methods
This course will encompass the acquisition of language and the development of reading. The focus will be on theory, strategies, methods, and materials.

Requisite Information: Admission to Teacher Education Required
TEEL 377 Internship 1
Opportunity for students to obtain experience in instruction in the teaching and assessment of social studies, management of a classroom, and making adjustments for individual student needs under the supervision of education faculty.

Requisite Information: CO., TEEL 363, admission to Teacher Education required, forty hours of field is required.
TEEL 378 Internship 2
Opportunity for students to obtain experience in
instruction in the teaching and assessment of
reading and language arts with the integration of
technology under the supervision of education
faculty.

Requisite Information:
TEEL 365, forty hours of field is required, admission to
Teacher Education required, CO.
TEEL 431 Educational Psychology
A study of the psychology of learning, individual differences and measurement, with emphasis on individual learning.

Requisite Information: Admission to Teacher Education required
TEEL 472 Readings in Education I
Directed professional reading according to the needs of the individual.

Requisite Information: Permission Required
TEEL 476 Apprenticeship in Education
Opportunity for students to obtain experience in instruction under the supervision of the education faculty.

Requisite Information: Permission Required
TEEL 478 Internship 3
Opportunity for students to obtain experience in
instruction in the teaching of mathematics and
science under the supervision of the education
faculty. Forty hours of field time is required
for this experience.

Requisite Information: TEEL 362 - Non-Lab Co-Requisite, Admission to Teacher Education required, CO., TEEL 362
TEEL 480 Correction of Reading Disabilities Internship I
This internship must be taken in conjuction with
TEEL 481 Correction of Reading Disabilities.

TEEL 481 Correction of Reading Disabilities I
Focuses on application of word recognition and comprehension skills and related aspects of reading instruction by tutoring, under supervision, a child with reading deficiencies. Lecture involves learning correlates of reading problems and diagnostic techniques.

Requisite Information: TEEL 480 - Lab Co-Requisite, Teacher Education Required, PR., TEEL 365 or PERM, Admission to Teacher Education required
TEEL 482 Honors Internship 6
Opportunity for students to obtain experience in instruction in the teaching and assessment of mathematics and science under the supervision of the education faculty. Forty hours of field time is required for this experience. Admission to teacher education is required.

Requisite Information: TEEL 362 - Non-Lab Co-Requisite, TEEL 483 - Non-Lab Co-Requisite, Good standing in Honors program required. To be taken first semester in lieu of TEEL 478
TEEL 495 The Elementary School
This course is designed to assist prospective teachers in the development of skills in: (1) the prevention and remediation of classroom discipline problems; (2) the creation of classroom environments conducive to learning; (3) implementing instruction in the elementary school; and (4) securing and maintaining employment.

Requisite Information: PR., Admission to Directed Teaching required, CO., TEEL 496
TEEL 496 Directed Teaching Elementary
Admission by application submitted to the education department office. Supervised teaching experience is provided in approved elementary schools. Directed teaching in: (1) elementary school; (2) elementary school art; (3) elementary school music; (4) elementary school physical education; and (5) early childhood and preschool.

Requisite Information: Admission to Directed Teaching required, Elementary Education majors will take TEEL 495 concurrently with this course.
TEEL 673 Problems in Education I
A critical study of selected problems relating to the educational area under consideration.

Requisite Information: Permission Required
TEEL 678 Field Experience II
Provides the student an opportunity to obtain practical experience in an area of interest. The student will be under the supervision of a selected practitioner.
TEEL 679 Practicum in Education I
This course is designed to relate theory to practice in a realistic fashion. The student is placed in a situation to obtain experience relating directly or indirectly to the area being studied.

Requisite Information: Permission Required
TEEL 845 Theories of Learning
Includes major theories of learning, related research and issues.
TEEL 873 Problems in Educaiton II
Independent study of an educational problem.

Requisite Information: Permission Required
TEEL 876 Apprenticeship in Education II
Opportunity for graduate-level students to obtain experience in instruction under the supervision of the graduate faculty.
TEEL 881 Content Area Reading
Study of learning and reading as related to content area subjects. Focuses on techniques and understandings for teaching students how to use print as a tool for learning.
TEEL 884 Literacy Development
Explores underlying language and literacy development from a psycholinguistic perspective. Classroom techniques to foster emergent literacy development are stressed.
TEEL 885 The School Reading Program (Practicum)
A practicum experience in the school setting. Focus will be upon organization of the reading program in the school and its interrelationships with pupils, parents, other teachers, and administrators.

Requisite Information: PR., TEEL 883 or equivalent, or PERM
